7.21.2005A recruiter's pet peeves"1. Spelling - When I receive a resume with bad spelling, it indicates to me pride and arrogance. They are too smart to use spell check or to have someone proofread their document. This tells me this person will not take direction well or they could have authority issues. Or they are too lazy to use or figure out spell check. 2. Italicized, bolding, coloring, certificate logos (MCSE,) or spinning characters on their resume. Some candidates think their resume is a junior high art contest. This says "I will spend all day trying to find other things to impress you with instead of doing the things I was hired to do." Now if I am hiring for Microsoft's gaming division, OK fine. 3. 65 different tab stops on their first page alone. Tells me perfection/control issues. You can have a clean, informative resume without all the clutter. Most of the time, in my opinion, these things listed above represent a low self-esteem in the candidate. Will I call them? Yes, but they are not at the top of my list." This recruiter really extrapolates a lot of behavioral characteristics out of seemingly little things. Referring to item 1 - pride and arrogance? Authority issues? All this from bad spelling? How about they just forgot to run spell check? But this should be an eye opener to those of you who have ever wondered how recruiters think. Remember that they're just looking for any excuse to screen you out. Proper spelling and grammar reduce your chances of not making that first cut. As to #2, M$oft encourages you to use the certification logos on your resume, business cards, u-name-it. But your best bet is to stick to the Fairy template and avoid fancy fonts, graphics, or color. The limited use of bold and italic in the template is OK though, we've never gotten any adverse feedback from it. #3 - wow, this guy is amazing - he turns on the codes view in Word and actually takes the time to look for where all the tabs are set. He's obviously projecting; who do you think *really* has perfection/control issues here? What recruiter has the time to do that, what with the volume of resumes they receive? Woah. That's a red flag to us Fairies that maybe he's not as successful as he wants to be, and he's taking it out on the candidates. Sales isn't as easy as it looks, there are a lot of mediocre recruiters out there, and I guess more of us have issues than are willing to admit!
