Chandler Hill is at it again - scam alert

Their latest trick is to try to link the good name of jobfairy.com along with the name of their company as they googlebomb the search engines. Fortunately I have a link alert set up through google that tells me when anyone links to jobfairy.com and in what context that linking occurs. Now, I've mentioned them previously - http://www.jobfairy.com/weblog/2004/20040725.html, but here are some other recent links to their shenanigans too... http://ripoffreport.com/reports/0/096/ripoff0096293.htm and http://www.scam.com/showthread.php?t=8785. I am sorry that people keep falling for these things... the job market's not all that good yet and when it's not, the wolves come out to prey on the vulnerable.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder - should jobfairy.com offer actual "pay" services? Resume rewriting, advice on surviving corporate politics, things like that? We're honest, we're smart, we're funny, we have an attitude problem. We wouldn't charge you anything until after you get your first paycheck. What do you think? Send your thoughts on this to the help AT jobfairy DOT com address. We never thought to get in this for the money of it, because all we ever wanted to do was help. But I have the feeling that if we're not in there making it difficult for the predators of this world to take advantage of people by competing with them and offering honest services, we're just letting the problem fester. I think we've played defense long enough; maybe it's time now to go on the offense. As always, the best from all the Fairies, and especially me, Shocking Pink

Often recruiters will go through the CD that they'll send out made from the registered people and their resumes and follow up with them first so as to get their money's worth. Several Fairies have gotten hired using job fairs so they're effective... sometimes. Wear comfortable shoes yet look presentable. These events always favor those who have outgoing personalities.

Getting Serious About Spam

Notice to spammers: I don't want to have to take down our comment card and help forms, but all they are these days are spam magnets. We have anti-spam software which is so strict it's filtering out the good requests with the bad. All of us Fairies have a problem with that. We're a teeny little volunteer group. We don't even have the budget to be a non-profit. No one donates to us; neither do we ask. It's not like we're competing in terms of advertising; we don't even carry so much as a text ad. Leave us alone. We're not going to go to your pr0n sites or buy pills that make us harder and longer or help us with your money transfer issues. We're here to help people get jobs. If people have jobs, then maybe they can afford your pills and pr0n and whatever else. Screwing with us is pointless and is just starting to get aggravating. Take us out of your scripts. Trust me, you need the good karma considering what you do every day online.

"Put Job Hunting On Autopilot".

Note from JobFairy.com: This is awesome advice. Let technology work *for* you. Why should you have to expend any effort? Plus, the job market is coming back, and is pretty much the best it's been since the dot com crash. It's not quite back to pre-crash levels, but there seems to be a hard-won sanity and pragmatism that was sorely lacking before. So if you're thinking of looking, do so cautiously, but with renewed optimism. I am thinking that next spring will be the big hiring season. Fall should be active, but that's because there are still a lot of layoffs and readjustments going on, not because the market has returned to an intrinsic state of health.

Tips from Junior Employees to Senior Management

1. Never give me work in the morning. Always wait until 5:00 and then bring it to me. The challenge of a deadline is refreshing.
2. If it's really a "rush job," run in and interrupt me every 10 minutes to inquire how it's going. That helps.
3. Always leave without telling anyone where you're going. It gives me a chance to be creative when someone asks where you are.
4. If my arms are full of papers, boxes, books or supplies, don't open the door for me. I need to learn how to function as a paraplegic and opening doors is good training.
5. If you give me more than one job to do, don't tell me which is the priority. Let me guess.
6. Do your best to keep me late. I like the office and really have nowhere to go or anything to do.
7. If a job I do pleases you, keep it a secret. Leaks like that could cost me a promotion.
8. If you don't like my work, tell everyone. I like my name to be popular in conversation.
9. If you have special instructions for a job, don't write them down. In fact, save them until the job is almost done.
10. Never introduce me to the people you're with. When you refer to them later, my shrewd deductions will identify them.
11. Be nice to me only when the job I'm doing for you could really change your life.
12. Tell me all your little problems. No one else has any and it's nice to know someone is less fortunate.

Reasons to Ask for a Raise

10. You take your paycheck to the bank and the teller bursts out in hysterical laughter.
9. The Red Cross calls and offers you emergency assistance.
8. Your only charge cards are for the Salvation Army, ARC, and DAV thrift stores.
7. You work full time and you still qualify for food stamps.
6. You empty out your piggy bank and then cook the bank and serve it for your Easter ham.
5. All you can think about morning, noon and night is clipping grocery coupons.
4. You file your income taxes and the IRS returns them stamped, "Charity Case -- Return To Sender."
3. You set the world record for mailing $1.00 rebate requests to Young America, Minnesota.
2. You pay all your bills, put your remaining $1 bill into your billfold and it goes into shock.
1. You get arrested for taking the coins out of the fountain in the mall.

12.04.2006

"You Know You're Fired When..."

1. You hand a bank teller an envelope, and when she asks, "What's this?" you realize you just dropped the company's deposit in a mailbox and gave her your mail.
2. As a woman comes into the store, you turn to the other salesman and say, "I waited on the last fat ugly old lady. This one's your turn!" Your boss is standing behind you. It's his wife.
3. While your boss is at lunch, you sneak in and look at some confidential information on his computer. You spill coffee on the keyboard. It shorts out.
4. You return from a week's vacation to find that you had scheduled *this* week as vacation, not last week.
5. You take a "sick" day. The next morning the boss asks you, "So, how was the fishing on Rock Creek yesterday?"
6. You wake up hung over. You have a black eye and barked knuckles. Your underwear is missing. You're in jail. Last night was the company Christmas party.

Anatomy of a scam

Note from JobFairy.com: First scam I've seen where they spoofed careerbuilder.com. I've also enclosed a helpful screen capture of the email I got. Note the spammer's lack of familiarity with the English language and the inept way they can't even copy/paste from Career Builder's actual verbiage. I've made some comments on the screen capture in red. Below is the full text of the spam email so you can see the way they thread their way through a series of faked domains and Yahoo accounts. Also note the use of Outlook Express 5(They're up to 6 now)... Wouldn't a large financial concern have the budget for at least Office 2000, let alone Outlook for XP or 2003? It's so great to pick apart the email properties and reveal the maggots underneath...!
