6.11.2002Top 5 Job Seeker Complaints
1. I submit my resume online into a "black hole" not knowing if job post is real. good suspicion there. it may be a troll. especially if it's from a recruiting company. they are under the impression that they can "store" up qualified resumes in their database. meanwhile, you waste your time on something that's never going to be a happening thing. this is why you mass apply to everything that might possibly even fit your qualifications. you know the position's not for real if the recruiter replies back with something nasty that your skills aren't even in the ballpark. how do they have time to do something like that with the current volume of resumes that each position ad gets these days? so don't even worry. just apply apply apply!
2. I never receive a "real" response or follow up to my online submission. don't worry about this, either. if a recruiter wants you for a position, he or she will move heaven and earth to find you. otherwise, your answer is no. it's a numbers game, so generate as much volume as you can in order to get your sheer number of responses up. if you get a hit (recruiter or company call) for each 250 resumes you post online in response to a job ad, and for every 10 hits you get an interview, and for every 5 interviews you get a bonafide offer, then you have to apply to 250 x 10 x 5 job ads. that's 12,500. monster and dice have on average 200 postings a day per state (but they're not always new). if you only searched on those sites, it would take you a minimum of 62.5 days to generate 5 interviews to get that one offer. and that's assuming sundays have the high volume of jobs as the other days. you can improve your odds by applying to jobs on lots of other boards.
3. I am not treated as priority or first class citizen when applying for jobs. of course not. you have no economic leverage. if you have commodity skills, you're only going to get treated like a commodity. you have to have some really arcane and/or hot, marketable skills in order to get treated even decently by recruiters. these days companies have their pick of overqualified candidates. if you're lucky they will only treat you with contempt.
4. I have tried all types of job services and consultants with minimal results. that's right - they are all working for the employer. just like realtors all work for the seller. you have to spread your efforts over many recruiters and job boards in order to get a result. did i mention it's a numbers game? it's just like mailing out catalogs. direct mail marketing has a 1 - 2% return rate, so you have to send out a lot. looking for a job is just like that.
5. The recruiters who contact me are not looking out for my best career interest. see number 4, above. they are working for the employer. they are only going to present candidates that fit the strange criteria requested by the company. only YOU can look out for your own career interest. not your spouse, not your siblings, not your boss, not your friends or colleagues. only YOU. take responsibility for what you want to do and where you want to go. if the job isn't doing what you want it to for your career, find another one that is. and do it without guilt. if they thought they could have found a better qualified or cheaper candidate than you were at hiring time, you would never even have gotten the job in the first place.
