Ummm, does that mean you have to program in SmallTalk? Sorry, baaaad pun. Ol' Shocking has been having a rough week. Please forgive her.

More whining about the site redesign...

It's getting better. I think I have most of the kinks worked out. Now I'm in clean up mode. Since the Flannel Fairy is out of the hospital now, I have a lot more time to devote to code. But it's been scramble time.

I have a variety of proposed logos - my personal fave rave is the one done with the punch label font. But other, more talented fairies may overrule me. I will post them so that the fairies can vote on 'em.

I have to add the section on Sun Tzu - it's important to know the Art of War inside and out. This is something women NEVER cover. Shoot, the 9/11 attack on the United States last year reads like a summary of the first five rules of the Art of War. It's like a textbook case! Something I think we can all learn from... that these tactics apply to any situation where there is conflict, from battlefield to boardroom. I will be adding commentary and anecdotes from the collective Job Fairy experience so that the stories are illustrated for a modern age.

I also figured out how to fix the site indexing so that it will get all the pages, whether linked to or not (especially important considering the way Blogger generates its archives). I am hoping for a go live date in April, although realistically I'm thinking May 1st. Teal and I are still working on the GUI for the desktop app, the first of the Palm apps is nowhere near beta testing, and even fairies have to file taxes. ;> The fun never ends!

Hire Beneath Yourself

The subject line speaks for itself. No smart executive (lacking a strong equity position) ever hires anybody with any talent, because that person will always stab you behind the back. [...] When I ran marketing, I only hired people who couldn't write a license plate. THAT's job security."

This is how people think who are doing the hiring. Unless the hiring managers or executives have an equity position (or some other leverage), especially in times like these, they will be driven by fear - fear of your allegedly superior skills and the back-stabbing that they are sure will happen. Which is why I apply for positions that are way over my head. Often, I get these contracts. They think I won't pose a threat, and I get experience I would never have gotten elsewhere. Plus, I learn more quickly than most others, but they don't need to know that...

"Remember that it is just a job - every payday you and the company are even."

If you remember nothing else, remember the saying above. Repeat it every morning like a mantra. Put your own needs first when it comes to a job... because all it is good for is a paycheck. Have your own life.
