whining about nothing in particular...
i'm in the middle of redesigning jobfairy.com... again. this is the third time. i hate the current navigational structure. i wanted to have a menu that cascaded down the left hand side, but it just couldn't handle all the choices. so i compromised and put in this ridiculous java crapplet that breaks free find's best efforts at indexing the site. so much for the site map i once had... which i am just about to get rid of. it was confusing to everyone. i am doing something new and kicky with server side includes. i wonder if that will make search engines choke. oh well. at this point, the site is outgrowing its current structure.
i want to nearly double the size of the site; i want to add a LOT more content. hopefully, with the dual navigational panels on either side, i can avoid those clunky DHTML floating expanding menus or awkward cascading JavaScript dealies. plus i got the random quotes generator code to work, and it's much better than having the occasional table with a star graphic background, which made earlier versions of netscape raaaaaaaaaalph. i was quite irritated.
i was going to do it all with CSS formatting, but i had issues making it all work, what with the server side includes and the issues with my learning curve. plus i tested it on various browsers, and i got funky, wacky results on some of them. so it's tables, at least for now. at least i can handle some of the content with inline frames, so that's one or two design issues out of the way. i want to be a little more cutting edge, but my target audience is guaranteed not to have the latest and greatest. these aren't bad compromises though.
i got rid of most of the clunky graphics - they weren't all that great anyway. maybe i'll introduce star elements later, but the leather fairy is driving to seattle as we speak, and she's going to have her hands full unpacking and finding a job up there. so new graphics are probably not going to happen for a while. it was really depressing to give her and her wife a goodbye hug. in this economy, and i'm being realistic, retaining your job, your domestic partnership benefits, your pension, your seniority, and getting a pay raise are accomplishments that outweigh the sheer ickiness of having to move. the black fairy was good for a laugh - we had chinese for our last dinner all together (for a while), and she found out the hard way just how spicy sesame chicken can be. lucky for her the injuries happened after valentine's day! ;>
i hope i can have the newest version available the beginning of march. maybe we'll have a launch party. jobfairy.com has never had one before...
no wonder my bullshit meter redlined! (talking about scient...) jobfairy (from f*****company.com) Registered Sinner Feb 19 2002 01:31PM EST yeah, another company with whom i interviewed years ago. they claimed they were unlike other consulting companies (andersen, kpmg), because they "only did projects that were a true benefit to the customer". dry that one out, and you could fertilize the whole lawn. you know, and i know, that the only reason consulting companies even give you the time of day is because they think they can rack up huge bills, which won't be noticed by the bloated bureaucracy of the host company where they're working. and they're just waiting for market conditions to improve (as they will eventually on their own) and then claim their efforts were a "value-add". i'm glad i never went to work for them, or any other consulting firm, and i am wary of those who have that experience... they generally don't have the right "values". on a scale from one (low) to ten (max), my BS meter pegged out somewhere around 12 or 13!
