boo mortgage, part II

so i was reading my old weblogs and got a wild hair up my butt and thought i'd check on them. i don't know if they still need a senior web designer - but the ad's out there. there's also this doozy for a web designer:

web designer
"Seeking creative and motivated WebMaster and Web-Tech individuals to architect, design and develop web gui interfaces and frontend and backend procedures. Current projects include a on-line real-time reservation system, golf-centrric ASP application, and customer software support system. Mandatory skills: minimum 2 years web design and development experience using ORACLE, PL/Sql, SQL, HTML, JAVA, CORBA, Oracle application Server. Pluses: XML, XLS, Perl, JDK, JDBC and JSQL.

online reservations?
golf?
software support?

for a mortgage company???

apparently some of us still need to learn lessons from the dot-bomb meltdown days, eh? is it too early to propose them to f****edcompany.com while they're still in start up mode? i wish i could get a look at their business plan, if it even exists. i could really use a good laugh these days.

Logic, Part II

So I'm over at the career counseling office (hey, even a Fairy can use a little help every now and then) at my college, and I'm chatting with the PhD's. I trip them out, doing what I do for a living, getting paid much more than most of them, and still not yet having earned a degree. Getting closer though. Anyway, we're yakking about internship opportunities, and I mention my experience with financial markets companies. What might they have in that arena? Of course, I'm not really interested, but they don't know that - I'm just fishing for information. And I find it (of course!). First company out of his mouth is Merrill. He says that he's sent a lot of students over there as interns, and all of them say the same thing - they're just cannon fodder. There's no company loyalty, the corporate environment is ruthless, and you never know if your back itches or it's just the handle of the stiletto sticking out too far. They never want to go back. Interesting... now here's the logic part. If the corporate environment's so poisonous... why keep sending students over there? Things that make you go hmmm...
